Ernie Gehr: Carnival of Shadows

MoMA, 2016

Inspired by early animation and genre cinema, the exhibition Ernie Gehr: Carnival of Shadows was comprised of a large-scale multiscreen video installation in which Gehr playfully abstracted 20th-century shadowgraph toys. Using the evenly spaced vertical lines employed by the shadowgraphs, the custom typographic treatment on the title wall created the illusion of movement, depth, and shadow.
